The Move: Truck Packing Part 2

Today we finalized our truck pack. At the risk of bragging, I would say the truck is packed extremely well. So well in fact, that we beat the last move’s pack by a foot, and our budget (as estimated by ABF) by 3 feet. And it’s an extremely tight pack with evenly defined layers. We ended up with a perfectly straight back wall for the bulkhead. Again, we had some great help today and the rest of the house was in the truck in under an hour and a half.

That's right--16' was all it took! And yes, I tightened the ratchet strap before we left! That’s right–16′ was all it took! And yes, I tightened the ratchet strap before we left!Of course, even though we had 99% of the house packed and ready to go, the last 1% took 4 hours to wrap up. Not sure why that is, but it seems that little things multiply at the last minute and all require boxing. But we finally got it all wrangled and the house was clean.

Long-time readers of this blog will know that we did something similar just 19 months ago, when we moved from Rochester, NY to Minneapolis. Ever one for improving processes and making things better, I’ve been striving to make this move better than the last one. One thing we did better was book a hotel with a hot tub the last night in MN. So after a long 2 days of packing, we hit the hotel and immediately the hot tub. That was genius, if I do say so myself.

Nickelodeon Universe at Mall of America. Nickelodeon Universe at Mall of America.Afterward, we hit the Mall of America one last time for a little Famous Dave’s BBQ and some Cold Stone ice cream. That too, was genius. Tomorrow we’ll start our 1921 mile trek west. Our goal for Monday is Lincoln, NE. No particular reason, other than it’s about 400 miles away. I don’t expect there will be a lot of excitement between here and there (at least I hope not anyway!). So for now, we pray for safe travel, solid mechanical workings of automobiles and a successful pickup of our trailer by ABF. Seems they don’t answer the phone or have any time of answering service on Sundays–even though they said I needed to call today. Go figure.

More tomorrow–hopefully from Lincoln!

The Move: Day 1–Pack the Truck

This is the first In a series of posts that will chronicle our move from Minnesota to California. While normally this is a tech blog, since I’m not currently doing tech but moving to a new church, that’s what I’ve got to write about. Normal geeky stuff will resume in a few weeks.

So, on to day 1: Pack the truck. Today’s goal was to get most of our stuff out of the house and into the garage. I hoped to get about 1/2 the truck packed. Well, as often happens, things didn’t go as planned. The house was emptied in about an hour, and we got nearly 90% of the truck packed. Under-promise, over-deliver; that’s my motto. We had a great crew today, that’s for sure.

We’re using ABF to get our stuff to SoCal. They drop off a 28′ truck and we load our stuff. You pay by the foot, and their estimate for us was 19′. I was pretty sure we’d fit into that. The count right now stands at 12′. With just a few more things to go, I think we’ll be under 17′. This means we save money, Which is a good thing.

The plan is to have a few more people come over tomorrow and get the beds, the big screen, chairs and final kitchen stuff into the trailer. We stay at a hotel tomorrow, the first of 9 such nights before we will be reunited with our stuff in our new home.

I will be attempting to track our progress acros the country with quick blog posts and some pictures. Since I just got an iPhone, I’ll be trying to blog from that.

That’s it. Day 1 is in the can!
